Commencement: A day for memories and memorable quotes

Among the fun aspects of being back at Wake Forest is hearing how visitors view our traditional campus events. At Commencement Monday, happy quotes were flying. Here’s one of my favorite exchanges:
“Our grandson’s girlfriend is graduating summa cum laude.”
“What about your grandson?” asked a WFU staffer.
“He’s thank the laude!”

Other memorable quotes – these from authors of children’s books – highlighted remarks by alumnus Charles Ergen (MBA ’76, P ’12), an entrepreneur who founded DISH Network and EchoStar Communications Corp. Addressing the Class of 2012 on a picture-perfect graduation day, he reflected on the lessons of Dr. Seuss, Curious George, Matilda, the Runaway Bunny and Dumbledore. “Like Curious George I’ve always wondered why something can’t be done. Focusing on ‘we can,’ instead of ‘we can’t,’ ” said Ergen, who knows how to build companies from the ground up. Among his keys to success? Never stop learning, be curious, try new things, be the best at something and have the nerve to “go whole hog.”
