Introducing Distinguished Alumni
University leaders, trustees and graduates celebrated the newest recipients of Wake Forest's Distinguished Alumni Award at a gala dinner Friday night.
U.S. Sen. Richard Burr ('78) of Winston-Salem, Jane Owens Cage ('78) of Joplin, Mo., and the late Graham W. Denton Jr. ('67, P '93, '97, '10) of Charlotte were honored for service to community and their alma mater. Burr was a defensive back on the Demon Deacon football team who worked his way up to the U.S. Senate and says he never forgot the Pro Humanitate lessons he learned. Cage used her business savvy to lead efforts as a volunteer to revive Joplin after the devastating tornado. Her city named her Outstanding Citizen of the Year last April. Denton became one of North Carolina's most respected bankers yet never failed to find time for Wake Forest. He died in January.
