Happy New Year to all our Deac families! I hope you and your students have had a restful Winter Break and a holiday filled with joy, laughter, and the love of family and friends.

Here on campus we are eager to welcome your students back to their home away from home. We await the arrival of the young women who will participate in the sorority recruitment process, and then the rest of the student body a few days after that. We especially welcome back our students who had been abroad and are returning.

Many of you are dealing with a lot of snow this time of year. So far, we have not seen any snow on campus, but because it is so pretty we wanted you to see the campus all in white.

It’s a new year, and a new semester. Let’s make the most of it!

Go Deacs!

Academics and Events

The Office of Academic Advising reminds families of two important procedural items:
  • WIN Registration for the Spring 2014 Semester will continue until January 17th. From January 17th- January 28th, all adds/drops will require add/drop forms, which must be turned into the Registrar's Office.
  • The deadline to declare part-time status for the Spring 2014 semester will be January 28th. Students must meet with an Academic Counselor in the Office of Academic Advising, to declare part-time status.

Campus Life

Sorority Recruitment takes place in early January, before the start of classes. If your daughter has registered to participate in sorority recruitment, please see this Q&A and description of the process. Fraternity recruitment will take place after classes have begun. If your son has registered to participate in fraternity recruitment, please see this Q&A and description of the process.

Student Union will sponsor Spring Family Weekend February 28- March 2, 2014. Join us for a weekend of entertainment with your student as our Demon Deacon Men's Basketball team takes on Boston College! The registration website should go live in mid- to late-January. The link will be posted on the Parents’ Page when it goes live.

In December, Wake Forest named Dave Clawson as the new head coach of the football team. We welcome Coach Clawson to campus and look forward to an exciting season.

Resources

The deadline for application to this year’s Kemper Scholars Program is Thursday, January 16, 2014. The Kemper Scholars Program combines scholarship aid, mentorship by James S. Kemper Foundation staff, and paid summer professional internship opportunities. Students from any major and those who have not yet decided on a major are encouraged to apply. A minimum GPA of 3.0 is required.

As the new year begins, we are reminded that students who have lost a friend, loved one, or classmate during the fall semester may still be in the grieving process. Grieving is a very personal and individualized process, one which has no timeline. There is no right way to grieve. The University Counseling Center has provided some grief support resources for students who are grieving, as well as parents and others who wish to support their student in his or her grief.

During the fall semester, students in some areas of campus have contacted Residence Life and Housing or Facilities and Campus Services to report possible mold in their residence hall rooms. Though mold spores can exist anywhere, are naturally present in the environment outdoors, and appear indoors for many reasons, our staff take every report seriously. We respond to every incoming message and investigate each situation. As part of our protocol, when mold is found, prompt steps are taken to remove it and provide information to the student that can help reduce the chances of its return. Learn more about how the University addresses reports of mold.

As the spring semester begins, University Police reminds parents and families to encourage their students to follow good safety precautions and practices. See University Police recommendations for students.

An unexpected withdrawal due to sickness or injury can mean significant financial consequences for families. Wake Forest offers an elective tuition insurance plan that will help minimize financial loss if a student suffers a serious illness or accident and must withdraw before the end of a semester. See more about Tuition Refund Insurance offered through A.W.G Dewar, Inc. The last day to apply for spring semester coverage is January 13, 2014.

Student Financial Services reminds families that their student can get his/her tax form 1098-T in electronic format via WIN. This will provide students with a fast, convenient and secure way to access their tax form and also allow them to view prior year(s) 1098-T tax forms.

THE DAILY DEAC

Nothing Could Be Finer
November 19th, 2013
Than us beating Carolina.

Nothing.

Nil. Nada. Zip.

There is simply nothing better than the Deacs beating dreaded rival UNC.

It’s better than blowing up the Death Star, chucking the One Ring into Mordor, or watching Michael Corleone outwit and outplay the Five Families in one fell swoop.
