Spring is in the air at Wake Forest. After what has been an exceptionally bad winter, we are – at last! – showing signs of spring. The flowers and flowering trees on campus are beginning to bloom, and the next month on campus will be gorgeous

March ushers in two exciting moments in the life of our campus: acceptance letters will soon be mailed to students who are invited to become members of the Class of 2018, and we are preparing to send the Class of 2014 into the world as graduates in May.

The Commencement speaker for 2014 will be Jill Abramson, executive editor of The New York Times. Abramson serves in the highest-ranking position in The Times’s newsroom and oversees its news and content in all its various forms. Prior to being named the newspaper’s first female executive editor, she helped supervise the coverage of two wars, four national elections, and devastating events such as Hurricane Katrina and the BP oil spill. She was also deeply engaged in the newsroom’s effort to change its approach to the dissemination of news and to expand to new and varied digital and mobile platforms.

The Baccalaureate speaker will be Melissa Rogers, special assistant to the President and executive director of the White House Office of Faith-based and Neighborhood Partnerships. In her work for the White House, she serves as a guide helping to navigate the sometimes difficult pathways where issues of church and state intersect. Rogers formerly served as director of the Center for Religion and Public Affairs at Wake Forest University School of Divinity and as a nonresident senior fellow in the governance studies program for the Brookings Institution.

For parents and families of the Class of 2014, we invite you to visit the Commencement website for full details about Commencement weekend

We hope your students had a great Spring Break and are looking forward to a strong end to the semester!

Academics and Events

The Office of Academic Advising reminds families of the following important dates: March 12th: Midterm Grades were due by noon. Students will be able to access their grades on WIN; March 17th-March 28th: Spring 2014 registration advising period; March 31st-April 11- Rounds 1 and 2 of Registration for Fall 2014 classes.

Summer school classes are now available in Charlotte! While Wake Forest has always provided a variety of summer school options on the Reynolda Campus, this is the first year the College will offer undergraduate summer school courses at the Wake Forest Charlotte Campus. This is a great opportunity for students living, working or interning in the Charlotte area to further their studies in communication, psychology, and English. Registration begins March 17 and classes run June 2-27. More information about summer school is available here.

Campus Life

A new series of events - Fridays @ Farrell - will kick off Friday, March 21st from 5-7pm at the Farrell Hall Terrace. These events are open to all students graduating from the School of Business in 2014, as well as School of Business alumni in the Triad, and current and past parents. Fridays at Farrell will provide a great chance for our graduating business students to network with alumni, parents, and faculty and staff. Kindly register in advance to attend.

Alumnus Bob McCreary (’61) has made a $7.5 million gift in support of the Wake Forest Football program, adding momentum to Wake Forest’s plans to move forward with a 95,000-square-foot sports performance center. McCreary’s most recent gift, when combined with a recently announced $2 million gift from alumnus and former Wake Forest parent Alan Fox (’79, MBA ’81, P ’12) and $3 million in other gifts, brings the total commitments made in support of the football program to $12.5 million since the launch of Wake Will: The Campaign for Wake Forest.

For parents of the Class of 2014: encourage your student to schedule a senior portrait. The Spring portrait session will take place March 17th through March 21st in Benson Room 500 (HowlerOffice). Appointments can be scheduled at www.ouryear.com using school code 87110. Students will be given complete information on how to prepare for the portrait sitting when the appointment is scheduled.

Graduating seniors should make plans to attend the Grad Fair on March 26 and 27 from 10 am until 4 pm at the College Bookstore. They can order caps and gowns, pick up commencement weekend material from University Events, and review their diploma information and graduation status with the University Registrar. See the Commencement website checklists section for more information.

THE DAILY DEAC

On St. Patrick’s Day
March 17th, 2014
In honor of St. Patrick’s Day today, many people on campus will be wearing green and thinking about some of the various ways this day is celebrated (no doubt there will be some Irish foods and green cakes in the Pit today). But right under your students’ noses – likely invisible – is a very important piece of Irish studies that I hope they will one day discover. [more ...]
