E-newsletter from the Office of Parent Programs

March came in like a lion with the big news that Stephen Colbert will be the Commencement 2015 speaker on Monday, May 18. Here’s a snippet from our news release:

“Stephen Colbert is a best-selling author, writer, comedian, former presidential candidate and television personality. He is most widely known as the host and executive producer of Comedy Central’s acclaimed series, ‘The Colbert Report,’ which audiences and critics alike hailed as one of the top comedy shows on television.

‘We are thrilled Stephen Colbert has accepted the invitation to speak at Wake Forest’s commencement ceremony,’ said President Nathan O. Hatch. ‘I’m not sure what our graduates will enjoy more – how his creative genius reflects the exaggerated extremes of politics and contemporary life or how so many of us at Wake Forest will find ourselves on the receiving end of his jokes.’

Also joining Wake Forest for the commencement weekend will be baccalaureate speaker Jonathan L. Walton, the Plummer Professor of Christian Morals at Harvard University and Pusey Minister in Harvard’s Memorial Church. He is also a professor of religion and society on the faculty of divinity.”

For parents and families of the Class of 2015, the Commencement website is live. Visit it for information about tickets, scheduling, and more.

Hope your students had a wonderful and restful Spring Break and are ready to have a fantastic end to the semester.

Does your student need additional credits, or does he/she want to focus on an important prerequisite for a potential major? Summer Session can be a wonderful way to accomplish those goals for many Wake Forest students. The academic summer session at Wake Forest offers a significant opportunity to accrue credits toward graduation on the Reynolda Campus as well as in one of several courses offered abroad. These experiences will be offered between May 26 - July 2 (Session 1) and July 7 - August 10 (Session 2).

Campus Life and Events

Residence Life & Housing reminds families that Housing and Dining selection will take place in April. Information about the Room Selection process is available on the Residence Life and Housing website. See the Parents’ Page News section for times for Info Sessions, Q&A Tables, and Help Desk (on the Where Will You Wake? flyer). Before Housing and Dining Selection in April, talk to your student about which meal plan will best suit their needs for next year.

Wake n’ Shake: The Reynolds Varsity Gym will be rocking on Saturday, March 21st when over 1,300 students from across campus will be on their feet for 12 hours (noon-midnight) to raise awareness and monies for the Brian Piccolo Cancer Research Fund. The 10th anniversary of the Wake ‘n Shake Dance Marathon will feature live music, testimonies from Cancer Team Champions, food, games and entertainment. All students are welcome to participate in this fun and meaningful Wake Forest tradition. For more information and dancer registration, please visit wakenshake.com.

College. The word implies mountains of textbooks and rivers of lukewarm coffee. Entering Wake Forest University, we were eager to dive headfirst into biology lab and literary analysis. Four years later, we reflect how experiences in the Forest equipped us to take on local and global challenges as a community. As we prepare to write our next chapter, I ponder three questions.
