It’s hard to believe that classes are over and it is time for final exams. Commencement is just a few weeks away, and we wish all the best to our Class of 2014 and their proud parents and families. Please be sure to visit the Commencement website for full details about Commencement weekend. Our office frequently gets asked some logistical questions about Commencement weekend, and we tried to answer some of those on the Daily Deac website.

For those of you who are parents and family members of the incoming Class of 2018, welcome to the Wake Forest family! If you have not already, please be sure you fill out a Parent Record Form so we have your contact information. In mid- to late-May, a New Students website will go live for the Class of 2018, and there will be a section for parents and families as well. We’ll put links on the Parents’ Page and the Daily Deac once the New Students website goes live.

It will be bittersweet to say goodbye to the Class of 2014, but we hope they – and you – stay close to Wake Forest. We are all part of the same Deacon family.

The American Academy of Arts and Sciences has elected President Nathan Hatch among its newest members. One of the nation’s most prestigious honorary societies, the Academy is also a leading center for independent policy research. Members contribute to Academy publications and studies of science and technology policy, energy and global security, social policy and American institutions, and the humanities, arts and education.

Dean of the College, Jacque Fetrow will become Provost at the University of Richmond on July 1. As Dean since 2009, her tenure has been marked by a strong reaffirmation of the College’s signature tradition of close student-faculty engagement, with support for the Undergraduate Research and Creative Activity (URECA) Center, development of the Office of Academic Advising, and more.

Academics and Events

The Office of Academic Advising offers this Fall 2014 semester reminder: If your student is currently under 12 hours of course registration for Fall 2014, please encourage him/her to register for additional courses. Registration will remain available to continuing students until mid-June. It will open again for continuing students in mid-August after new students have completed their Fall registration. If your student is having difficulty finding courses, please have him/her visit The Office of Academic Advising for assistance with the fall schedule.

Campus Life

Residence Life and Housing has spring semester closing procedures on its website. For students who had not chosen a residence hall and are on the Yet To Be Assigned (YTBA) list, there is additional information online. The Application for Summer School Housing is available online and should be submitted as soon as possible. Space is limited.

Packing and shipping items for the summer – students who are interested in packing and/or shipping items home for the summer can learn more information here.

Resources

The Office of Personal and Career Development wants parents and families to encourage their graduating seniors to provide “First Destination” data in an important survey. The First Destination form provides an opportunity for seniors to share where they will go and what they will do immediately following graduation and is valuable information for the university. It takes less than one minute to complete and can be found here on the OPCD website.

Have a student who is interested in working in Washington D.C.? He/she should attend Wake Forest Connects - a large-scale networking event that gives students the chance to connect with prominent WFU Alumni from various industries. The next Wake Forest Connects event is scheduled for June 5 in Washington D.C. at 6:00 p.m. For more information visit the Career Connects webpage.

Graduating seniors also have the ability to create an alumni Gmail account. This Gmail account will be an actual account with access to Google Drive and all of Gmail’s standard functions. It will allow students the opportunity to transfer their existing @wfu.edu content (messages, files, contacts) to their new @alumni.wfu.edu account. If your graduates do not take advantage of this service, please encourage them to update their physical and email addresses on the alumni update form. This will enable Wake Forest to send them information about events taking place in their post-graduation regions.

Student Financial Services announces that the tuition due date for students who are attending either session of summer school is June 1, 2014. Students who registered for summer by April 31st had their charges reflected on their May 1st monthly billing statement. For students who registered after that date, please refer to the daily status screen of DEAC to see the amount owed by the due date of June 1st. If you have questions, please call Student Financial Services at 336-758-5234 or email sfs@wfu.edu.

University Police is continuing its series of recommendations for student safety and security. This month they are focusing on identity theft and how to stay protected.

THE DAILY DEAC

Help Get Your Senior Prepared for Graduation
April 29th, 2014
There are two critical pieces of information that we need from your students after they graduate. The first is their updated email address and physical address. We need their address and email so we know where they are physically living after graduation so we can include them in appropriate Wake Forest Club events in their area and so we can send them other news and updates.
