For Incoming Parents and Families of enrolling freshmen in the Class of 2020

The Office of Academic Advising is open during our normal business hours over the summer, and staff members are available to answer questions in person, over the phone, or via email. If your child will be an incoming first-year student in the fall, s/he will be registering for up to 10 credit hours during Round 1 of registration, July 18-21. After students have completed this first round of registration, they should review and submit their Course Preference Surveys, due no later than July 22. Professional advisers will use these surveys to complete students’ schedules, so it is very important that they are submitted on time!

Your students have access to the New Students website, which is the online source for all Orientation and pre-arrival information. There is a parents and families section that we encourage you to use throughout the summer. Please be sure to review all these sections and associated subpages:

Encourage your student to check his/her WFU email regularly and to visit the New Students website often.

If you will want access to your student's grades, or if you anticipate ever wanting to talk to a University staff member about your student's educational progress, your student must give you Proxy Access due to FERPA (Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act.)  For more information on FERPA, and how your child can indicate permission for you to access educational information, see  Please read this web site and talk about it with your student.

Just for Parents: Helping with the Transition to College and Beyond: Led by Dr. James Raper (University Counseling Center) and Dr. Joanne Clinch (Student Health Service), this parents-only presentation and discussion will focus on a variety of topics including: the transition from high school to college, common issues experienced during the college years, child/parent relationship strategies, suggestions for maintaining emotional and physical health, healthy boundaries, and when/how to access the multitude of support systems on campus.  There will be opportunities for interactive discussion in an informal and fun atmosphere. In addition there will be a panel of experts from Campus Life available for additional questions from the audience.  Register for the program.

New Student Receptions will begin in June. Register for these optional programs via the New Student Receptions website.

The fall Academic Calendar is available online. While the academic calendar is a general guideline of when school is out of session, before you make any firm travel arrangements, students will need to consult the syllabus for each of his/her fall classes and understand the class/exam schedule to be sure they are still on campus for required classes and exams.

Turning Tassels: We celebrate our graduates! All these memories can be relived and shared through our Commencement coverage website, including the livestream from our graduate hooding ceremony, a Flickr photo gallery, and more!
